“Oppenheimer” opened in Japan eight months after its worldwide release, grossing $2.5 million from 343 theaters. This made it the biggest opening weekend of 2024 for a Hollywood release in Japan, surpassing previous entries like “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” and “Dune: Part Two.”

The film’s global box office total stands at $965 million, with “Oppenheimer” being the third-biggest film of Christopher Nolan’s career. Despite the controversial subject matter, which includes the creation of the atomic bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the film received a positive response in Japan, both critically and commercially.

The release was delayed out of respect for Japan’s people, who remain affected by the events depicted in the film. Nolan defended his creative choices, focusing on Oppenheimer’s perspective on the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings 1235.
